I am happy to reveal that we have secured a small batch of the latest limited edition watch from Squale, the “2001 Heritage”. This a reproduction of the orignal model from the 60s. A sought after watch with a great story.
The orignal 2001 is an iconic model chosen by legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau. Limited to just 300 pieces, this edition is a faithful reproduction that captures the essence of the original while integrating modern advancements.
The History
To commemorate Squale’s 65th anniversary, the brand highlighted the influential figures who shaped its reputation in the dive watch sector. Among these stories, Jacques-Yves Cousteau famously chose the Squale 2001 as a gift for Michel Laval, the first officer of the Calypso, during the 1972 Antarctic expedition. This particular watch was engraved with Cousteau’s initials and Laval’s full name, adding a personal touch to its legacy.
Following Laval’s passing, the watch returned to Cousteau and was later entrusted to his friend André Laban, who kept it until his own death in 2018. The timepiece eventually came into the hands of a German collector before finding its way to an Italian digital entrepreneur. This rich narrative of the watch’s journey inspired Squale to create a new edition of this iconic model.
The design
Retaining the exact proportions and dimensions of its predecessor, the Squale 2001 Heritage features an asymmetric barrel-shaped case with hidden lugs, making the 43 mm length feel notably compact. With an overall diameter of 40 mm and a crown positioned at 4 o’clock, the design is seamlessly integrated into the watch’s profile.
Stand out features
One of the standout features of this limited edition is its two-tone bezel, crafted in striking black and orange. This color scheme pays tribute to the vintage aesthetics of 1960s dive watches. The bezel is made from sapphire crystal, offering superior resistance to shocks and scratches. Additionally, it employs the innovative “push to release” system, allowing the bezel to be unlocked in both directions with perpendicular pressure, ensuring maximum security against accidental impacts.
Vintage and modern at the same time
Designed with vintage inspiration in mind, the watch showcases a classic black dial encircled by a white rehaut and contrasting minute markers. The polished steel indices are applied and coated with SuperLuminova C3, guaranteeing excellent legibility in low-light conditions. True to its heritage, the dial features the word “Saphir,” signifying the use of sapphire crystal to protect the timepiece.
Water resistance is a standout feature of the Squale 2001 Heritage, rated up to 60 atmospheres. This impressive capability is achieved through the combination of sapphire crystal and a polished 316L stainless steel case. Completing the limited edition is a rubber Tropic-style strap, a nod to the model worn by Michel Laval during the 1972 Antarctic expedition.
The Squale 2001 Heritage edition not only celebrates the brand’s illustrious history but also reinforces its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. This watch is not just a tool for divers; it’s a piece of history, meticulously crafted for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Don’t miss your chance to own this limited edition that beautifully blends tradition with innovation.
