The 2001 Heritage Limited edition is limited to 300 pieces only.
The Squale 2001 collection marks a significant moment in dive watch history, originating in the 1960s when advancements transformed watches into professional tools. This collection introduced key innovations, including the first use of “push to release” technology for locking the bezel after setting dive times. With a resistance of 100 atmospheres, it became a hallmark of dive watch design, leading to the development of subsequent models like the Squale 2002 and 2003.
In celebration of Squale’s 65th anniversary, the brand acknowledged the contributions of individuals who helped establish its legacy in the dive watch industry. Notably, Jacques-Yves Cousteau selected the Squale 2001 as a gift for Michel Laval, the first officer of the Calypso, at the outset of the 1972 Antarctic expedition. The watch featured a personalized engraving with Cousteau’s initials and Laval’s full name.
After Laval’s death, the watch was returned to Cousteau and later given to André Laban, who retained it until his passing in 2018. The watch eventually found its way to a German collector before being acquired by an Italian digital entrepreneur. This history inspired Squale to produce a new edition of the iconic model.
