Sekvens Journal

Introduction

The Squale 50 Atmos Ref. 1521 is more than just a dive watch; it’s a wearable tribute to the scuba community and the vibrant 1960s from which it draws its heritage. During the ’60s, Squale was synonymous with quality and reliability in the diving watch realm. Their significant contributions to iconic diving timepieces, including crafting for other esteemed brands, firmly placed them in the annals of watchmaking history. Today Squale still produces dive watches with the same passion for durability. Each time piece is produced is Swiss made and based on Swiss automatic movements.

Design & Craftsmanship

Boasting a 42mm stainless steel casing, the 1521 merges history with modernity. It offers a snug fit, thanks to its 13 mm thickness (including the flat sapphire crystal) and a 20mm lug width. The model takes its name from the original production reference that Von Büren gave to this case back in the 1960s. To this day, it has remained faithful to the original. It was designed and built by Charles Von Büren at a time when diving watches were just beginning to appear. The coin-edged bezel is not just a design element; it provides an excellent grip, and the polished case adds a contemporary yet timeless luxury touch.

Dial, Features & Variants

The luminescent markers and hands are reminiscent of the ’60s designs, ensuring clarity in murky underwater conditions. And it carries the iconic orange minute hand, highly functional but also adding a lot of character. It’s also backed by a solid case and an impressive water resistance of up to 500 meters, making it a trustworthy underwater companion. Further enhancing its appeal, the 1521 is available in several models, allowing enthusiasts to choose one that perfectly aligns with their style. The black PVD version with a black stainless steel mesh bracelet is one of our favorites.

Precision Movement

At the heart of the Squale 50 Atmos Ref. 1521 lies a precise and reliable Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, ensuring that the watch will be able to last generation when taken well care of. This movement is known for its robustness and efficiency. The movement supplied in the 1521 series is holds the “Elaboré” standard – for those who see the best of the best there is also an option to get the COSC certifed 1521, available in black or ocean blue.

One of the standout attributes of the 1521 is its comfort. Designed with wearability in mind, the watch fits seamlessly on the wrist, making it suitable for daily wear, underwater adventures, or elegant evenings. And it wears surprisingly well even on a smaller wrists.
